Hi there! Like I assume many of you, I am incredibly excited about Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu.” At the moment, I have tickets for my father and me to see it on Christmas day in 35mm. I will be visiting family in Oregon during Christmas, explaining why I have access to a 35mm screening, which I believe is not available in Utah.
I recently saw the original 1922 “Nosferatu” synced to Radiohead music at the Broadway Center Cinemas to remind myself of how the plot plays out. For one, the experience was a lot of fun. The music didn’t always fit, but it was entertaining nonetheless. The plot follows the same beats as Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” novel with a few minor changes. Since watching it, I have been trying to connect shots from the trailer of the 2024 film to plot points in the original film. I believe the beginning will play out pretty similarly with Hutter traveling to Count Orlock’s castle to sell him the house across the street from his. Where I think the big changes will be with the addition of Willem Dafoe’s character, who seems like a Van Helsing-type character. This is absent from the original, so I think the film will have a lot more of a bombastic conclusion, with Dafoe’s character leading a mod to kill Count Orlock.
I also think Ellen Hutter will be a lot more..erm…into Orlock this time around. In the original, she seems mostly scared of Orlock and all attraction comes from some sort of vampiric possession. In this, I think possession will have a large part to play, but Ellen will be genuinely attracted to Orlock in many ways, which will be a far larger focus of the film.
The full soundtrack has also been released, and it’s great! The music box piece that seemingly starts the film is haunting and cool.
Anyway, I am extremely excited about this film and can’t wait to watch it! Comment below what you are most excited to see in the new Eggers film!
