Anora Discussion Post

Hi there! At this point, I have seen the new Sean Baker film “Anora” twice, which is somewhat of a spoiler for how I felt about the film. I first saw it with some of my editors at the Chronicle on a conference trip to New Orleans. I then saw it a second time with my friend here in Salt Lake. Both times I absolutely adored it, finding it to be one of the best films to come out this year.

I’ve seen two other Baker films before this, “Tangerine” and “Red Rocket.” While I enjoyed both those films, I found “Anora” to be leagues above them. Despite being two hours and 20 minutes long, I was never bored throughout the runtime. I laughed harder at some of the lines and actions in this film than I have at any other in any movie this year. Mikey Madison was incredible as Ani but the cast as a whole was fantastic.

Of course, that final scene was a gut punch and left me and my friends at both screenings in silence. It puts the whole film in a different perspective and leaves the viewer with much to think about. Hilarious and tragic, “Anora” is definitely a film I’ll be returning to in the future.
